Celebrating St George's Day

25/4/2016

Thank you to everyone who came to our St George’s Day Concert on 23rd April.

The Brammall Music Building at The University of Birmingham was a stunning venue for the show, and it was great to share the stage with guests, The Black Country Ukulele Band, and choirs from Edgbaston High School for Girls. We also had some stellar soloist performances from our own ranks – Steve O’Malley, Mark Evetts and Jack Brookes.

Our programme opened with a version of the National Anthem, and then throughout the night we sang everything from a Beatles Medley, to the rousing ‘The Song of the Jolly Roger’, to a beautiful calm ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ to classic Gilbert & Sullivan pieces.

To finish, we joined forces with the EHS choirs and the audience to sing Land of Hope & Glory, with a lot of flag waving!

Thank you to Jim Banister for doing a great job of compering the evening.

If you couldn’t make it to the show, you can still hear us sing - watch this video of us singing

Another visit from BBC WM

15/4/2016

We were very excited to hear that BBC WM had enjoyed their visit so much in February; they wanted to come back to the Grimshaw Room to give Daz Hale another go at ‘finding his voice.’

With World Voice Day fast approaching, the producer of Danny Kelly’s mid-morning show sent his roving reporter to come along and have another lesson in singing.

Our conductor Steve Roche told BBC WM about the history of the choir, his own experience and upcoming concerts before giving Daz a quick warm up to stretch those vocal chords.

Daz had a quick chat with Gordon (who’s been with us for 14 years), Colin (who joined us 2 years ago) and our newest recruit Jim – who has settled in fantastically after just 3 weeks!

We all enjoyed having a sing along to the Beatles classic ‘When I’m sixty four’ and we think Daz did a great job!

Thank you to all the choir members that were able to come along, and thanks again to BBC WM – you’re   welcome anytime!

Listen to Steve’s interview on BBC Radio WM (go to 01:49:03 for the start).

Listen to Daz singing with us on BBC Radio WM (go to 02:49:18 for the start).

Now in their 116th year, it’s no surprise that The Birmingham Icknield Male Voice Choir have a large collection of memories which have been created over the years.

When asked about Steve’s most enjoyable moment, he mentions “without a doubt the weekly practices which always contain humour, friendship, banter and provide a welcome break from the stresses and strain of everyday life.”

There’s a clear sense of community and friendship within the choir. Every Tuesday evening they join each other to catch up and have a laugh. “We’ve been through a lot together. The men performed on two very emotional occasions of mine, both my wedding and also my father’s funeral. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

We took a trip down memory lane than with one of the choir’s longest standing members Steve Roche who has not only been the conductor for 25 years, but has also been associated with the group for almost 40 years!

“One of my proudest moments definitely has to be in the year 2000, when we performed a chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at Canon Hill Park in support of the 80,000 Rovers workers who marched in. Thinking about it, still brings a tear to my eye – what an experience!”

If you would like to make some memories with the choir, head on down to The Grimshaw Room behind St Chad’s Cathedral on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. All ages are welcome.
